Before You Get a Pet
Before getting carried away, you need to take some time to sit down and think about getting a pet. So many people underestimate the sheer work when having a pet, no matter what kind of animal it is. Every pet, whether it’s a dog, cat, or smaller animal, will need a degree of care, attention, and time.
Start by visiting your local pet shops and rescue centres to speak with trained staff who can provide valuable insight into the needs of different animals. Par exemple, chat with friends and family who are pet owners themselves. They can share first-hand their experience and tell you how they deal with all the responsabilités. What animal would you get? Here are the top five best pets for kids.
Fish
Fish can make great first pets for kids, and they come with their own set of benefits and challenges. The pros? They’re fascinating to watch, come in a variety of couleurs vibrantes, and can help teach children responsibility through feeding routines and tank maintenance. The drawbacks? Fish aren’t interactive in the way many kids might hope. No cuddles from them and they won’t seek attention.
Caring for them properly also requires more effort than simply placing a goldfish in a bowl. A well-maintained tank needs a proper aquarium water filter system, regular water changes, and monitoring for illnesses.
If your child is interested in a low-contact pet and you’re willing to put in the work to maintain a healthy environment, fish can be un bon choix.
Bunnies
Bunnies can be fantastic pets for children. We have 2 bunnies called Chanel and Daisy and they make us laugh so much. But bear in mind that they require a good deal of care. They are intelligent, inquisitive, and highly social animals, so they’re great for entertainment.
Our rabbits certainement enjoy being stroked and snuggling up with us on the sofa, but many don’t like being picked up and carried. It can be difficile for children to understand.
They also have strong natural instincts, so be préparés for this. Bunnies love to dig and will happily burrow through gardens if given the chance! Rabbits thrive in areas where they can explore, play, and solve puzzles, so you will have to provide them with toys and space for them to explore.
Caring for a bunny is a big responsibility, and while children can help, adults should be prepared to take on much of the work. Personnellement, we LOVE our bunnies. They are super cute, but also cheeky at times. We also love watching videos of Bobo Ellie Buns on Youtube.
Parakeet
Parakeets can make a wonderful pet for children. But like the rest, they need attention and proper care to stay happy and healthy.
These small, intelligent birds can be quite interactive, especially if given le bon environnement. You will need to buy toys like mirrors to keep them entertained. Keep their cage clean, with fresh water available at all times, and positioned out of direct sunlight.
If you allow your parakeet to fly around the room, always ensure that windows and doors are securely closed, and draw the curtains to prevent accidents. Parakeets can form strong bonds with their owners, but children should always be supervised to ensure gentle handling and safe interactions.
Dogs
I grew up with dogs all my childhood and I would love to have my own one day. They make an be incredible pet for kids, but it really depends on the owners and the dog breed. Some breeds are naturally gentle, patient, and protective. Others may require more training and socialisation.
Personnellement, I think we would go for a Labrador Retriever or a Dalmatian. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are also very friendly and affectionate, whereas smaller breeds like beagles and cocker spaniels can be more playful and energetic. Just got for the breed that fits best your lifestyle.
Dogs are constant companionship and are highly interactive, so they’re great for kids and offer a lot of engagement. But equally they are A LOT of work. So don’t take this décision lightly. Dogs need regular walks, training. It might sound like une bonne idée, but c’est important to consider whether your family is ready for the long-term commitment a dog requires.
One of the biggest challenges for pet owners is ensuring their dog gets the right nutrition. Many commercial pet foods contain fillers and artificial ingredients that don’t truly support a dog’s health in the long run. That is why many pet owners turn to high-quality food options like Dr. Marty Nature’s Blend, a freeze-dried raw dog food packed with essential nutrients.
Cats
Cats are way more low-maintenance. So they make a great option for families who want a loving and interactive pet without the commitment of a dog. While they don’t require daily walks or constant supervision, they can still form deep bonds with you and provide plenty of affection.
Par exemple, Siamese cats are known for being playful, vocal, and highly engaging. Many cat owners find that their pets give just as much love as dogs but with far less work.
If you’re considering a kitten, adopting two instead of one can actually make things easier. Indeed, kittens learn important social behaviours from each other, keep each other entertained, and are often calmer around people as a result.
Getting a pet can be such a great experience for all the family. But c’est important to take time to consider how a new pet will impact your lifestyle and how much care it requires. We love our bunnies dearly, but they do require quite a bit of work and it’s not always easy when we want to get away on holidays etc. Whatever you decide, make sure to do your recherche and choose a pet that will thrive in your home.
