Do you, like many parents, dream of sharing the slopes with your children? Teaching your kids to ski isn’t just about creating memories, it’s about passing on a skill they can enjoy for life. Now, it may seem like a daunting task, but with patience, fun and the right approach, you can help your little ones fall in love with the slopes. Where would you go? I would check out all the incredible places in the world to ski like Avoriaz! Get started now with my 4 tips to teach your kids how to ski!
Start With Basics
Like any other skills, when you teach your kids how to ski, le secret is to not rush it and introduce one skill at a time.
Keep the initial leçons simples and manageable. You obviously need to focus on balance as well as stopping, and controlling the speed. Those are the first steps.
Start by making sure they’re comfortable in their ski boots and understand how to use their skis before you even hit the slopes.
C’est essentiel to take your time, as rushing through the basics can lead to frustration for both you and your child. Let them progress at their own pace and don’t worry about how long it takes to get the hang of it. Every child est différent and the more relaxed and encouraging you are, the more they’ll enjoy the experience.
Make It Fun
I can’t stop going on about it but the best way to learn is through fun! You got to make sure you keep l’experience fun et positive. Par exemple, you could turn it into a game.
Many instructors use the ‘magic carpet hack’ to help kids developing their technique. Basically, the conveyor belts pull young skiers uphill, so they don’t have to worry about lifts early on and it is actually quite fun!
Celebrate every petit succés, whether it’s mastering the snowplough or simply staying upright for longer than before.
You can also introduce a bit of competition if your children likes it. Or what not creating a mini slalom course to help them navigate turns? You can play traffic light games where ‘green’ means go, ‘red’ means stop, and ‘yellow’ means slow down.
Falling is Part of the Fun
Your children need to learn early on that falling is part of the process, not a sign of failure. So l’excuse parfaite to practise resilience!
Help them to understand that everyone falls, even the most experienced skiers, that’s part of the process.
Children often model their behaviour on what they see, so when you fall, don’t make a big deal about it. By showing them that you fall too, they’ll be more inclined to brush it off and keep going.
Keeping Them Warm
If you’ve already been skiing yourself, you know how cold it can be out there on the slopes and it is even worse for little ones.
So layer up so that they keep warm at all times! Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, followed by insulating mid-layers and finish with a waterproof, insulated all-in-one suit to protect them from the cold and wet.
I would also get them some waterproof gloves, a warm hat and a good-quality helmet to keep them cosy and safe et voilà!
They will be rocking that outfit like any skieur professionnel!
Et voilà! Get ready to rock the slops with your children easily with all my best tips. Teaching your kids how to sky can be such une experience fun. Will you take the plunge and do it?
