DIY Projects For Home Safety

Do you like DIY jobs? Do you follow any blog in this area? here are so many possibilités to significantly enhance the safety of your home. As a busy mum, I want nothing more than projects easy to execute but that are also cost-effective.

I would start by installing deadbolt locks. It will provide you with additional layer of security. You can even go for some high-security deadbolts as they include reinforced strike plate with longer screws that secure into the wall stud for maximum sécurité.

I would also look into applying waterproof sealant. C’est facile as you don’t need much: some waterproof sealant, a caulking gun, an utility knife et voilà! It will help prevent water damage, which can lead to mould growth and structural issues. As a minimum, start with the bathroom and the kitchen. Go for  a premium sealant for waterproofing to ensure long-lasting results, especially in areas exposed to heavy moisture.

Lastly, invest into smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. It can littéralement save lives! Basically, it will make a noise if it detects monoxide leaks, giving you and your family crucial time to evacuate safely. It’s highly recommended to opt for interconnected smoke and CO detectors. This way, if one is triggered, they all go off, which provides extra safety in larger homes.

Create a Home Emergency Kit

Do you currently have one in your home? Ours include first aid supplies, flashlight, batteries, bottled water, non-perishable food, multi-tool and skeleton keys or picks (for emergency access).

Gather all the items and store them in ok containers to preserve the food and regularly check it and update so that everything is in good condition at all times. It might sound a bit alarmist but it will prepare you for various scenarios, from natural disasters to power outages, ensuring you have the essentials to stay safe and secure.

Smart Home Security Devices

Smart home security devices won’t take long to instal and yet, it will enhance so much your home for more securité and it’s so convenient!

They make a better option than traditional locks as they come equipped with advanced features. Par exemple, many smart locks are designed to resist tampering and lock picking. This means that even if someone has a lock pick set, they will find it challenging to breach your home’s security.

You can even monitor and control your home’s security remotely, so parfait when you are on holidays! Thanks to your smartphone, check live video feeds, receive alerts, and even lock or unlock doors. Et voilà for peace of mind while you are away.

This level of control means that you’re always aware of what is happening at home. En plus, having real time alerts is definitely the best thing so that you can respond quickly to emergencies.

Such smart devices are also cost-effective in the long run. It might even lower your home insurance premiums. Check with your insurance.

Reinforce its structure. You might not be able to bolt the foundations, but you can invest in bracing walls by adding plywood or steel braces that protects more against high winds.

Whatever home improvement you go for, always use durable materials. Impact-resistant windows and waterproof sealant are good ones to start with.

In the UK, I think the main concern would be flooding. You can instal sump pumps and even flood vents that reduce the pressure on the structure and minimizing damage. Also look at roofing solutions, especially before the winter as the wind can get so bad!
