Bonjour lecteurs! Do you have any plans to update your house? We would like to redo our kitchen, but I also have plans for the bathroom. Designing a salle de bain is quite a challenge for homeowners and interior designers. Because it serves a special function and includes many appliances, you have to think carefully of the layout and how they will work altogether. It also needs to work for your personal needs and preferences. Here are a few tips to design your own bathroom.
Planning The Perfect Layout
First of all, you should think of the existing layout of the room and see what you can actually do. I would love to have a family bathroom with 2 sinks but the layout of the house doesn’t allow it.
Things to consider would be the plumbing, the ventilation, and even the shape of the room. You also need to review the space so that you move freely. It goes so quick and you don’t want to realise too late that you have the entrance too close to the sink par exemple.
If you have un espace petit, I would stick to the current layout as you will not have much room to play with. If you have a bigger space, you can get more experimental.
Choice Of Materials & Finishes
What couleurs would you go for? I would love a pink bathroom, but it is never to happen with the boys. Life is a compromise!
You also need to be careful with your choice or materials and finishes. A bathroom is naturellement exposed to more moisture so you need water-resistant materials.
That’s why porcelain tiles, natural stone, and vinyl make une bonne option. There are also many water and mould-resistant paints created specially for places like bathrooms.
Modern & Sustainable
Going for a modern bathroom will also be easier as it might contain special devices that use water much more efficiently.
To know which options are best for you, have a look for yourself in an actual shop rather than online. Visiting a bathroom showroom can give homeowners hands-on experience with the latest designs, fixtures, and materials before making any decisions.
Equally, low-flow showerheads and smart toilets can really cut down on your water consumption.
Think about your lifestyle and your needs rather than the last trend or some design and idées you might have seen somewhere but doesn’t really work in your home. My dream bathroom would come straight out of Country Life or Country Living, but we are in a new built so it does not really work!
Storage Solution
Le problème we have with our current bathroom is that it is quite small so we can’t store much in it.
It’s very minimal and I don’t have space for a few storage boxes to put everything away. I would love to have a hidden shelving area for everything where we could put all the beauty products, toys etc.
There are so many possibilités to find some extra storage. Beneath your bath, shower, or even your sink. And to put all you towels, and flannels, you might want to invest in a new cabinet or find another storage in the house. Go for neutral shades so that they will easily match your colour scheme. I also like bamboo as it is more sustainable and it gives such une atmosphère relaxante to the room. Thinking about adding some French touch to your space? La Redoute or Vert Baudet always offers some beautiful pieces.
Did this guide on how to build your own bathroom get you dreaming? I am already thinking about having a bath tonight with a couple of candles… L’excuse parfaite to start the weekend!
