Why Having a Hobby as a Mum Matters

Bonjour lecteurs! Far too often, mums prioritise everything over themselves. Once you’ve sorted it all in the house and the little ones are in bed, you scroll on your phone for hours. Before you know it, it’s time to go to bed and you feel like you’ve done nothing for yourself. It gets worst with the summer holidays, but they are soon to go back to school. So time to get organisée and find a new pastime where you can escape from the day to day life. Here is why having a hobby as a mum matters.

Day To Day Life

A mum’s diary is full of appointments and dates around the family. From the dentist appointment to endless parents’ evening or playground date, it’s non stop.

Don’t even get me started on shopping or all that needs to be done in the house: cleaning, cooking, ironing… The list goes on and on.

And then, there are all les dates spéciales to remember, the birthdays, the non uniform days… Just writing about it, I am getting dizzy.

Easy to forget yourself in the middle of this manic family life.

Self-care Isn’t a Candle

Somewhere along the line you might have resigned that looking after yourself is having a bath with a good book and a candle one. I LOVE a candle, but surely, there is more to life than this…

What about finding something to express yourself and do what you really love? Now, that’s real selfcare for mums.

That’s why you need a hobby! That’s exactly how this blog started. Sure, it became my full time job later down the line, but that’s another story for another time… You might not want to be a blogger, but what excites you? What did you always dream to do and never took the plunge?

Something To Do With Your Hands

There is a new trend going on at the minute. Mums are staring a hobby that they can do with their hands. J’adore l’idée! Imagine making something, but it’s like your safe space.

Basically a hobby that you can get 100% into, that helps you escaping from the day to day life.

It’s not a side thing you’ll turn into money. I am not talking about a wellness project with an app that pings you to keep up your streak either. Something absorbing and faintly indulgent, in the good way, that has nothing whatsoever to do with anyone else in the house.

Parents swear with model cars. I actually did a few of those with Stanley in the past and it was quite therapeutic. Why not build your own model cars, the LEGO-compatible kind you put together to display rather than hand to a child? You’re not building a toy. It’s a memento representing your ‘me time’.

Plus, you will find that doing something with your hands is really relaxing. I dare you to start, I bet you won’t be able to stop.

Why This One Stuck

What makes it une bonne idée is that it’s the perfect way to pause. Plus, you can do it around your schedule, whenever you want. Some nights you get twenty minutes. Others, you might get an hour and a half. A good kit doesn’t mind either way. They come in stages, so you sit down, do a section, and stop when you have to stop. There is no rush, just you and the kit, et voilà!

You can start small with a neat little desk piece, just to see if the thing is for you at all. Do it at your rhythm. I am sure you will find it addictive.

You’re allowed

And the best part? It can be your own project, something just for you, that does not involve the children. Personnellement, I end up doing a lot of the sets with Stanley as he loves doing it. But I could even start another model on the side just for me.

That’s the whole of it, really. You’re allowed a thing that is only yours. Not useful to anyone else. Noting to do with others. Just something that relaxes you and makes you happy. Plus, it’s kind of an achievement once you are done. Some kits are quite difficile, so you need a lot of attention to details and patience.

So, did I get you tempted by the idea? For now, all I want is an escape and quiet after a long 6 weeks of summer holidays with my sweet son at home… So maybe I will book with a spa day before getting on with my next LEGO set…
