Late Spring for Fewer Crowds & Green Scenery

May and early June sit in a sweet spot before summer tourist traffic hits full force. Temperatures typically range from the 18°C and 25°C, so it’s quite pleasant.  Snowmelt feeds waterfalls throughout the Front Range during this stretch. Expect scenic views when you drive up to places like Mount Evans or Rocky Mountain National Park.

But this period does come with a catch. Spring in Denver is famously unpredictable. A hot and sunny afternoon can turn into a hailstorm within an hour. Plus, late-season snow isn’t unheard of even in May. Pack layers and check the forecast daily rather than trusting a single weather app reading from the morning.

Hotel rates tend to dip slightly compared to peak summer. L’autre plus? Popular spots like the Denver Botanic Gardens or Red Rocks Park are noticeably less crowded.

Summer for Festivals and Long Days

No wonder it’s the busiest season! Daytime temperatures average is over 25°C. While it’s hot, the evenings cool off nicely and the city’s outdoor concert scene kicks into high gear at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. The venue hosts shows nearly every week from June through September. You’ve got to check it out.

This is also peak season for road trips into the mountains, but expect it to get busy.  day trip is worth doing.

Finding an accommodation will be a bit more expensive too. Hotels prices rise up to 30% compared to the Spring season, especially during major festivals like the Great American Beer Festival in late September or Independence Day weekend.

Fall for Mild Weather & Fewer Tourists

It September and early October bring warm days, cool nights, and some of the clearest skies of the year. Aspen trees across the state turn golden by late September, and areas like Kenosha Pass or Guanella Pass become popular day-trip destinations for leaf-peeping. C’est très beau!

Crowds thin out significantly after Labour Day. So hotel rates often drop back to spring-like levels. Denver’s outdoor patios stay busy through October thanks to mild afternoons.

By late October, temperatures start dropping fast, and the first snow can arrive as early as mid-October in some years. So I would go in early fall to see Denver at its peak.

Winter for Skiing & Snow Sports

Winter transforms the city into la destination parfaite for a ski weekend. You might have moderate snowfall, but nearby resorts like Keystone, Breckenridge, and Vail get dumped on regularly between December and March. Fly into Denver International Airport specifically to reach these resorts, using Denver to Keystone shuttle service for an easy connection. That’s way simpler than renting a car.

Denver’s winter days average in the 4°C , but it can get a bit higher. Here again, you need to layer up and pack a pair of waterproof boots to handle most winter scenarios without issue.

Hotel rates in the city stay reasonable during winter months, so you can get a good deal.

Matching the Season to the Trip

The right time to visit Denver depends very much on your plans. Skiers should aim  for January through March for the deepest snowpack, while hikers get better trail conditions from June through September. Anyone chasing lower prices and thinner crowds should look at September or May. Always remember to check the weather forecast though as it can change so fast.
