Bonjour lecteurs! How did you decide on your children’s names? Did you want to recognise someone close to you in the process? Or did you go for some trend at the time? Des recherches récentes from a provider of personalised number plates has revealed that names from classic myths are now back in popularity. Bienvenue Jupiter or Ulysses! What do you think of such names for newborns?
A New Trend In Baby’s Names
The recent study had a look at registered baby names in the UK from 1996 to 2022 and a new trend is pretty clear. Indeed, there is a substantial increase in popularity of names from classical mythology.
While baby names such as Leonidas, Odin and Osiris were très populaires in the 90s and early 2000s, it looks like la mythologie still inspire parents when it’s about naming their child nowadays.
A New Trend…
From Greek culture to Norse and Egyptian legends, we see more and more of those.
Would the Marvel Cinematic Universe have anything to do with it? Or even big shows such as the Vikings? After all, the TV show has been a huge hit and maybe parents wanted to create their own legend naming their bébé after des personnages fameux such as Thor, Loki or even Odin?
Boys Names
Names from the Greek Mythology are getting more populaires than ever in the recent years. Take Leonidas par exemple. It’s not just a brand of yummy chocolates…
The name became very popular after 2007. The previous year saw the release of le film 300 with Gerard Butler as the Spartan King.
In boys’ names, there’s also been a gradual rise in popularity of names like Ares – Greek god of war and courage – and Apollo, the god of war. Would you name your child after a god? Do you think that it would bring them some good luck in their life?
Look at this table of boys’ names between 1996 and 202 and see for yourself.

Girls Names
Girls names seem to take the same direction with a surge of mythical characters too.
Par exemple, Artemis is such a pretty name, Historically, she has been recognised as the goddess of the hunt and the wilderness.
She is often represented in nature and has something serein about her. The Roman equivalent, Diana has also increased in popularité.
I would not be surprise as some people might have been inspired by Princess Diana herself, who was such a British icon,
Another example from the Greek mythology? Athena is becoming more common amongst newborns. With the rise of kickass ladies in our culture, and more generally a stronger female empowerment, rules are clearly changing.
Freya is also a popular choice from the roman culture. Now the increase is even more noticeable than the boys’ names.
