Bonjour lecteurs! What is currently your home like? We bought our first-time house about 5 years ago. Back then, we thought we would look for a new place by now. However, given the recent economic situation, we decided to wait. Instead, we are considering staying where we are for a few extra years and maybe doing some work in the house. Are you in the same situation and not able to move right now? It might be worth expanding your property. Here are 8 Reasons To Extend Your Home.
Create Your Dream Home
If you ask me about my dream home, it would look like a cottage in the countryside.
However, we currently live in a more modern house. Like many others, I am dreaming of something I currently don’t have. C’est typique…
Well maybe instead of thinking that the grass is greener on the other side, it’s time to rethink it all. And adapt what you currently have.
Nowadays, it’s so easy and you can work with a local architect to create your new dream home with what you currently have.
And to turn it into your very personalised design. So you get what you really want!
Add Value To Your Property
En plus, as soon as you extend your home, you will add value to your property.
Right now, the market might not be idéal to sell your house. But in a few years’ time, there might be a better option.
More floor space means more money. Simple as that.
And not only it is a good investment for your future, but you can also enjoy more habitable space for your family.
Get More Liveable Space For Your Family
Simply think of all the unused space you may already have. I don’t know about you, but we used to live in a 2-bedroom flat in London and always felt we needed more room.
Fast forward 5 years, we now have a 4 bedrooms house and I still feel like we could do with some extra space for our vie de famille.
Personnellement, we have quite a subsequent front garden that we never ever use.
It could so easily be turned into a playroom, a library, or even an extra garage.
A Working Space At Home
Lifestyle has changed a lot over the last 2 years and if you are now working from home, you might want to extend your place to create your own working space.
Both Grumpy Boyfriend and I have been working from home for a couple of years now and we both have an office.
C’est très simple and so convenient. We saved up a lot of money as we did not need to commute anymore to work.
Get Extra Storage
You can also easily get extra storage.
Something as simple as a porch could make such a différence. Not only it is more aesthetic, but it can give you more space to store many things: coats, shoes, wellies…
The list goes on. So you don’t even need to do a big extension to make a difference.
Your Garden Space
Fancy a bigger garden space? What about building a conservatory?
We would love to have one in our house. J’adore le concept of having an extra room that directly leads into the garden.
Or you can add up smaller pieces to your garden. Why not turn your shed into an extra room? Or build an outdoor play area for the kids? Mine would be my heaven where I would write with a good cup of tea.
Build A Gym
You could even consider building your own gym.
Like many others, I sometimes struggle to make it to my local gym just because I can’t be bothered to get there in the first place.
It can be so time-consuming with the increasing traffic in town. And, as a busy working parent, I already feel that I am running around everywhere and I never have time for anything.
No more excuses! By having your own gym in the comfort of your home, you can go and do it any time. A good investment for your health.
Avoid The Cost Of Moving
I am sure that many households will have the same conversation right now.
And instead of moving, you will probably consider those 8 Reasons To Extend Your Home. So that you can create some more space, but also save up.
The average cost of moving is now between £10 000 and £25 000 according to Which.
You’ll have to pay upfront fees on top of the stamp duty and other legal expenses. It’s quite a lot to budget.
And even little things like redirecting your mail will add up quickly.
Maybe your planned budget is better off being used in your current house.
And what an exciting project to have too!
So here are 8 Reasons To Extend Your Home instead of moving. Make it more functional and fun. En plus, it will always end up cheaper than moving house.
Have you recently done any extension work in your house? Or considering it? What rooms would you go for if you were to extend your current home? What does your dream house look like?

I’d love to convert my garage into a garden room
The idea of a gym is very appealing – as is space – thanks
I have seen some fantastic remodelling extensions recently! It is amazing how it can sometimes completely change the layout of a house
We want to extend in a few years over our garage. Give ourselves a bigger bedroom with en-suite!
Would be tricky extending our 3rd floor flat.
Our flat is ground floor, but there is still no option to extend!
I moved/bought/sold 4 times in 6 years, each time you move it costs a fortune in fees/costs and the stress is such a roller coaster. If you can extend or do a loft conversion or garden office I would recommend it above moving!
Lots to think about!
We used to live in 3 bedroom house in Hertford and was planning to extend the front to create a bigger living room and hallway. Sadly we realised that everything was too far away for us. Visiting our family, going to work every day by train became expensive and so we decided to moved back to London. It’s ridiculous how for double the price the house in Hertford, we’re living in a 2 bedroom flat, half the size in Greenwich. Most of the living room is taken up by the balcony that goes inwards. I wish we could extend our space because storage is becoming hard
Very interesting blog post. We extended our home some years ago and added on, what we call the summer room, it’s not a conservatory (we had one of those an it was cold in winter and hot in the summer) but an extra room with windows all round.
I’d love to extend our home, just too pricey to do it! But I would, if I could ♥
My dream house would be a little cottage in a remote part of Cornwall by the sea! Instead we are in a terraced house in Devon, so not too bad!
My husband is a carpenter and so many people are choosing to extend at the moment instead of moving, I guess the economic climate is changing peoples mind on moving at the moment.
We have just changed our French doors to some with much thinner frames like those in your photo above and it feels like an extension !
I’d love a work from home space with a window opposite my desk like you have.
Great read for anyone wanting ideas to extend space in their home
