Bonjour lecteurs! How long have you been with your other half? I will be celebrating my 16th anniversary with Grumpy Boyfriend this year. When you’re in a long-term relationship, it’s easy for the initial excitement to fade into routine. In between family life and work, it’s not always easy to keep the spark alive. With Valentine’s Day approaching fast, here are some idées of romantic gestures to sustain the connection.

Surprise Date Nights at Home
Sometimes, the most intimate moments can happen in the comfort of your own home. No need to splash the case on an expensive hotel (mind you, I quite like it for les occasions spéciales…). But it’s easy to plan a surprise and make it personnel.
Think about how much more special it feels when it’s just the two of you, rather than a restaurant full of people. There are times when I can’t even be bothered to dress up and get ready for a glam night. I am just happy when Grumpy Boyfriend plans a date night. Add a few candles or a good glass of wine, et voilà! It’s not cliché when someone does something nice for you.
It can be as simple as cooking your partner’s favourite meal to say “Je t’aime!”. Taking the time to create these special evenings shows that you value your relationship. Plus, it also breaks up the monotony of your everyday life.
Write Love Notes and Letters
Now, it’s all about messaging and texting. But a handwritten love note could go a long way. It does not have to be corny or compliqué either. A Valentine’s Card is better than nothing or even leaving some Post-it notes on their desk?
It’s the perfect way to keep an emotional connection strong.
For a nice surprise, leave a note tucked into their bag or on the bathroom mirror, somewhere they least expect it. It will certainement make them smile. Plus, who does not live to be reminded that they are loved?
Give a Thoughtful Gift
Gift-giving shouldn’t be just for birthdays or holidays. It does not have to be expensive either
The key is to make it personal. You could gift something like a promise ring as a symbol of commitment. Or, if you’re after a smaller gesture, get them a treat like their favourite pastry or get a box of their favourite chocolate next time you go shopping. Anything that shows how well you know them will work.
Plan a Weekend Getaway
I am definitely a planner, and I love nothing more than a kids-free weekend. Don’t get me wrong, I love exploring new places with my family. But it’s also nice to escape the daily routine, just the two of us.
A weekend away from home can do wonders for your relationship. This could mean booking a few nights in a nearby cabin, or even a spa gateway nearby. Getting away from work pressures and other distractions will allow you to reconnect and relax for a little bit.
If it’s too much on your schedule, plan a day just for the 2 of you while the kids are at school. Go for a walk together, stop by the local pub for a drink and chat without interruption, etc. Anything that you both love to cut from the routines and all the obligations that come with parenting will do.
