How Much Does It Cost to Build a Garden Room?

Bonjour lecteurs! This post is for all the mamans working from home. Where is your current office space? I have been working littéralement on the corner of our dining table for years. But I would love to have my own space one day, and I dream of my little shed, where I can escape family life and concentrate fully. Is this a project you’re thinking about too? Juggling work with the summer holidays is already a bit of a stretch, so I would not be surprise if many of you thought about it. How Much Does It Cost to Build a Garden Room?

Les Avantages

Building a garden room is a great way to enhance the value of your property. Not only will you enjoy its functionality as a beautiful outdoor space, but you will also get so many benefits from a plus personnel point of view.

Imagine having your own space where you can fully concentrate and do all your work in peace. I think it’s also une bonne idée to separate family life and work life.

Cost of a Garden Room

Now, like any other home extension, the cost of a garden room will vary. It will obviously depend on the size you go for and what materials you will use. Plus, will you add any extra features? Par exemple, what style will you go for, a double patio or sliding doors? How many windows will you add?

You can also choose from une sélection large when it’s about the materials. From fibre cement or smooth or woodgrain composites or even cedar, there are so many choix.

Généralement, a garden room will start at £1o000. But if you want something more luxurious, it can go up to £50000.

Cost of a Self-build Garden Room

You might decide to go down the route of a self-build garden room to lower the cost. You could save up quite a bit of money. Indeed, you can order a self-assembled garden room for a bit over £5000 while a more premium kit will be around £8 000.

But you will need to bear in mind there will be additional costs. Par exemple, you will need extra tools and potential labour. There are many DIY garden room kits to choose from and if it is your thing, you can give this a go. Sure, you will need some family and friends to help.

Plus, as you might build it around your work schedule, it will take longer. Are you up for the challenge? I would not know where to start so I think I would probably hire a builder.

Hiring A Builder

If you’re not a natural DIY-er, hire a builder to do the work. Seeking professional help from an experienced contractor will add to the cost, but it gives you peace of mind.

You can even design your own garden room together if you want something unique or have a bespoke building that meets all your family’s  needs.

If you have the budget, go for it as you will end up with a tailor-made project. Bear in mind that there will be some extra hidden costs.

Depending on your project, you may need electricity, water and a waste connection. If that’s the case, your provider should carry out an in-depth site survey in order to give you an accurate quotation for carrying out all of the works.

It’s also une bonne idée to use a company that provides a turn-key solution, which may avoid lots of potential issues further down the line.

Legal Bits

Garden rooms are classified under ‘permitted development’, so you should not need planning permission.

However, you will have limitations in your project. You can only build a single-storey, with a maximum eave height of 2.5m, a maximum overall height of 4m.

Another rule? You can’t include any verandas, balconies or raised platforms, and it can’t take up than half the area of land around the original property. Lastly, it can not be used for overnight accommodation or self-contained living accommodation.

Are you still up for it? Ready to upgrade your home and have your own working space just for you?
