Bonjour lecteurs! What decade is your favourite? Do you ever feel nostalgique of the old days? The times when you were a child or in your early 20s? We all have different collective memories and experiences from 60s and the Beatles to Michael Jackson’s classic moonwalk hitting the stage. For me, the 90s was a big one as I was a teen and I got very much influenced by the Spice Girls and other events happening around that time. But sérieusement though, what exactly defines each generation? In the latest campaign run by Chums, the brand explores the top films, music, and fashion trends and historical moments from each decade to see how they influenced each generation… I am now going through 5 Decades That Influenced Our Life. Which one is yours?
The 60s Groove On
Now that the Euros 2024 is in full swings, no doubt that people from this generation will think about the World Cup in 1966 when England won!
The so called cultural decade was a time of social changes, with Baby Boomers reaching their teens and 20s, fighting for a more equal society.
It was such an important period for women, especially as they wanted to be more included in the working world! Exit the housewife role! It was all to change and even the fashion traditions would witness women’s liberation!
L’exemple parfait? Mary Quant’s miniskirt symbolising changing ideas around female beauty and liberation. But you may also remember other popular styles such as Givenchy’s baby doll dress and minimalist designs, culottes and go-go boots.
It’s one of my fave fashion eras.
The 70s Lowdown
The 70s was all about disco music and bold fashion but also the so charming Roger Moore playing James Bond.
The social justice continues and we also witnesses some technological advancements that began in the ’60s.
The 70s saw incredible world-changing moments, including the birth of the first IVF baby in 1978.
La musique was ever so diverse with many genres becoming popular: disco, funk, soul, and glam rock taking to the radio, with Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ on top of the charts.
It was all about wearing bold colours and patterns. Did you wear a pair of flares listening to Abba or Tom Jones?
Totally Rad 80s
I am actually a baby from the 80s as I was born during that decade. It was a tough time for people back then with mass unemployment but it was not all dark and gloom.
Pet Shop Boys made it to the UK charts for the first time in 1985 with West End Girls and we got to see iconic stars like Madonna emerging in the music industry too. My mum was obsessed with her album.
The 80s also gave us some epic movies. Indeed, nothing less than 81 films released in the ‘80s ended up in the USA’s National Film Registry of the Library of Congress!
Now which one of those titles is your fave? Beverly Hills Cop, Back To The Future or ET? I’ll go for the last option! I watched it like a million times!
Fashion wise, the 80s saw a further increase in women wearing less conservative clothing: the leather dress, the cowboys boots, or the punk style were big trends back then. Which one had your vote?
The 90s Were The Best!
My decade truly has to be the 90s. I am the typical millennial gal, having grown up with the Spice Girls and movies like Titanic and Jurassic Park.
I loved wearing flares, a puffer jacket and some platform shoes bien sûr!
Aqua’s unforgettable and frankly iconic “Barbie Girl” was playing non-stop on the radio while I was fighting with my brother to go on the internet. 1998 was the year when Goggle was founded and it changed our lives forever!
Do you remember the days when we had to wait for the page to load!? Now, the fast broadband makes me smile thinking about it…
2000’s: A technological blast!
Not so long ago? Well, if you visit a vintage shop, you will certainly find some pieces from the 2000s… So I am officiellement ancient!
We all started the decade partying like crazy, excited to start a new millennium. Business men thought there would be an economical désastre because of the year 2000 problem, but it did not happen ????
Who could forget the Twin Towers in 2001… That’s all we saw in the media for weeks. Many of us went on the street against the War in Iraq in 2003 and so much more!
New technologies were also getting into gear with the first sleek and shining iPhone launched in 2007 and we were all glued to our screens, witnessing the emergence of TV reality with Big Brother.
Movies like Mean Girls and TV shows like Gossip Girls showed us how to dress. It was clear that the world was changing very fast!
Writing this post, it’s crazy to see how much the world has changed in just 50 years. Each decade had such an impact on their respective generations through music, film, fashion, and historic moments. Those 5 Decades That Influenced Our Life are only the start. Wait to see what will happen in the next 50 years!
