What to Do If You Face Postpartum Negligence

Bonjour lecteurs! Pregnancy can be difficile and don’t get me started on the actual process of giving birth. I was in labour for 17 hours and I heard worse stories from other women. Every year in the UK, just under 700,000 babies are born, and in the majority of cases, pas de problèmes. But, the phase that follows birth is vital in ensuring the best possible outcome for both baby and mum. It’s often a struggle, especially for new mums. From depression to amnesia and physical pain, there is so much you can go through. You can still expect to benefit from the care of the health system after giving birth. Many figures such as midwives, health visitors or doctors will be there to support you. Still these professionnels can fail to provide the required level of care and attention. Here is what to do if you face postpartum negligence

Advocate for Yourself

To begin with, you’ll want to speak up. If you suffer en silence, then you won’t be able to find a remedy, legal or medical. Speak up about your concerns, and make it clear that you want action taken swiftly. This will not only increase your chances of getting attention for your case, and give you une bonne chance of receiving the right treatment.

And in a worst case scenario, it will also give greater weight to any legal action you may pursue.

Document Everything

The more thoroughly you document your case, the better your chances of evidencing a claim later. Keep a diary of your symptoms, and those of your baby, as well as the medications you’re taking. Get all of your correspondence with healthcare providers, and especially your midwife, in the same place.

Keeping a detailed diary during this period is not only practically beneficial. It might also help you to cope with the mental strain.

Seek Immediate Medical Care

In some cases, postpartum symptoms can be life-threatening. It’s vital that you know exactly what to look out for.

Seek for medical help as soon as you know that something is wrong. There are a range of medical professionals, including lactation consultants and therapeutes, that might alert you to specific symptoms to look out for. Heavy bleeding, chest pain, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the calf muscle (which is often a sign of deep vein thrombosis) are all des signes dangereux that should be urgently flagged.

Reach Out for Support

Pursuing legal action in order to get medical negligence compensation can be a strenuous thing. The right solicitor, however, will be able to guide you through the process and help you to obtain a remedy without having to go to court.

Similarly, friends and family can help you to cope with mental and social issues. Sometimes, a short chat over a cup of tea, or a five-minute break from the baby, might be all you need.

Bonne chance if you have to come to this. I know it ‘s not une décision facile to take, but you can do this!
