Fashion’s Footprint

We all know how bad fast fashion can be. Names such as SHEIN, Primark & Zara usually are a hit with youngsters. The price point is a big one, especially in your 20s. I know it, I have been there. But do your teens know that those brands contribute about 10% of global carbon emissions and 20% of wastewater?

Pas de surprise that the fashion industry is under growing pressure to clean up its act. Nowadays, we know we need to do better as community.

Being stylish and sustainable is the new gold standard, and whether you’re dressing for class, clubbing or chilling at home, here are my best sustainable fashion tips for you to feel good while leading the way for your children.

Rent, Don’t Buy

Whatever big event they have in le calendrier, a birthday, a rave party, a wedding… Why not renting a glam outfit for the occasion? Let’s be honnête, what’s the point of buying an ensemble that you will only wear once?

The truth is we don’t need to purchase a full outfit. There are so many platforms to rent clothes that will make us feel gorgeous for the day: HURRBy Rotation, and My Wardrobe HQ offer students access to high-end looks, without the financial or environmental costs.

So embrace the circular fashion model. It helps reduce demand for new garments and extend the lifecycle of existing ones.

The Art of Thrifting

Do you love the thrill of searching in charity shops for hidden fashion gems? I absolutely LOVE finding unique garments and vintage pieces.

Second-hand fashion outlets are huge at the minute. Plus, you can find such beautiful statement pieces to bring individualité to your style.

C’est facile with platformes like Depop, and Vinted: they offer access to luxury fashion with significantly lower environmental impact.

Even better, buying second-hand keeps clothes out of landfill, slashes emissions, and gives you something no one else is likely to have. C’est un succés!

Quality Over Quantity

When I was youngers, I used to love shopping in fast fashion outlets. It was cheap and easy. But truth being told, the clothes never lasted.

So now that I am in my 40s, I tend to invest in timeless chic wardrobe staples that will actually last. You can ever go further by creating a capsule wardrobe with only a few pieces that you rotate.

You need statement pieces such as a good cashmere jumper, a classy dress, a white shirt, a comfy pair of jeans, and something with stripes for a bit of oh la la.

Read The Labels

Sustainability has become a bit of a buzzword in recent years. Unfortunately, not all are true.

When you shop, look for independently verified certifications like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), which ensures organic fibres and fair labour. Par exemple, OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 guarantees your fabrics have been tested for harmful substances.

Even luxury brands like Chloé are now B Corp certified, setting new benchmarks for eco-conscious luxury.

Sell or Swap What You Don’t Wear

To go further with sustainable fashion, don’t throw away your clothes of if you don’t wear them anymore.

I love selling old pieces on Vinted for a smaller price. It gives me so much joy to think that someone else will enjoy my bits. It’s even so true with baby clothes. Most of the time, they are in conditions imppecables as they’ve only been worn a few times.

Don’t have time? Simply give your clothes to charity shops that support textile recycling. Par exemple, The Salvation Army and British Heart Foundation, collect textiles for reuse and recycling.

Sustainable Style Checklist

Before your next purchase, ask yourself the following:

  • Can I rent this instead of buying it?

  • Is this made to last?

  • Does the brand meet certified ethical standards?

  • Am I supporting a designer committed to change?

  • Would I be willing and able to sell, swap or donate this if I no longer needed it?

If you find yourself saying no more than yes… maybe find something else.

Inspire Younger Generations

You are always un exemple for your children. And by being sustainably fashionable, you will make your children’s future a better place.

Plus, we have a tendency to overconsume anyway. So why not lead the way and show younger girls that you can dress with style without breaking the bank. C’est une question de créativité.

Plus there is nothing more empowering that showing elegance with bold statement outfits doesn’t that don’t cost an arm.

Bonne chance styling your fav piece and creating a new fashion movement in your household.
