Bonjour lecteurs! The wedding season has officiellement  started and it’s  une bonne opportunité for a fun day without the kids. Oui, I know it’s more work, but c’est possible! It can be a lot to look after babies or smaller children, but it’s so magical for them. Navigating a day that starts with respectful silence and ends in raucous celebration with children in tow can feel daunting. But here are all my best tips for the whole family to have a great time. Discover exactly how to enjoy a wedding when attending with kids.

Pack Smart For the Day

Children rarely struggle because they are bored for five minutes. Most problems start when they feel hungry, uncomfortable or overtired, so it’s all about good planning. It’s worth having snacks or even a cosy jumper with you so that they’re comfy at all times.

Pack familiar things that they’re less likely to fuss over or create a mess when eating, along with refillable water bottles and wet wipes for cleaning sticky fingers and faces.  I would also pack at least one spare outfit. Un accident is so quick to happen. So better to be prepared than be sorry later.

Even for older kids, I would have a backup just in case: juice spills easily, and garden games get muddy. You’ll want them looking semi-presentable in pictures.

Bring one compact activity that travels easily and fits neatly into a medium-sized handbag. Avoid anything loud or with multiple pieces that can easily be lost. A colouring pad, a sticker book or a magnetic game is ideal wedding entertainment.

Choose Comfortable Outfits

Many parents focus so heavily on dressing children for photographs that they forget how long weddings actually last. A stiff shirt or tight shoes may look lovely at noon, fresh from the car, but become un réel problème by early evening. Plus let’s be honest, a smart look never lasts with kids…

Choose clothes that allow your child to move freely and sit comfortably instead. Layer breathable fabrics instead. It will help regulate temperature, keeping kids warm or cool wherever they are on the special day. You can still make outfits feel élégant without treating them like miniature adult formalwear. A cotton dress with a cardigan or lightweight shirt with smart trainers is suitable and ensures you’re prepared for any weather.

Consider your outfit too, choosing your wedding guest look with practicality in mind. The last thing you want is to feel restricted or off-balance when looking after the kids in a busy environment.

Create Little Distractions

Children manage events and excursions better when there are interactive elements. With the long stretches of adult conversation and speeches that demand silence, their patience will be tested, especially if there aren’t many other children to play with.

Give them small jobs that make them feel included. Older children might help carry confetti or hand out the keepsakes. Younger kids can be given random tasks that don’t risk ruining the running of the day, such as spotting flowers. These tiny tasks break up the day and give them something to focus on.

Screen time can help in moderation, particularly during the meal or speeches, but I would not rely on it too much…Make sure you bring headphones and keep them supervised. It’s une bonne idée to download films or games before leaving home just in case the venue WIFI is slow.

Share the Special Moments Together

Children often remember weddings more vividly when someone explains why certain traditions matter, connecting them emotionally with what they’re seeing. It adds to the magic and helps to keep them engaged and excited during the more meaningful parts of the day.

Point out meaningful details as the day unfolds. You might talk about traditions, such as explaining why guests throw confetti and showing the wedding rings crafted from precious metals or ask their opinion on the decorations and outfits. These moments help children understand l’importance of weddings. It adds some fun to the day.

Photos also become easier when children feel involved instead of managed. A child who has spent time watching the musicians or chatting with grandparents usually appears far more relaxed in pictures than one who has been repeatedly told to behave. If the photographer is willing, they could even show the children how it all works.

Take Frequent Breaks

Last but definitely not least, plan ahead and incorporate strategic breaks into the day. Even confident, sociable children reach a limit during weddings, and the loud music and conversation and crowds can overwhelm them surprisingly quickly when in unfamiliar surroundings.

There are lots of options for short breaks. Par exemple, you can take them for a walk to recharge and stay away from the noise if it’s too much. If your child becomes tired halfway through the celebration, adjust your expectations rather than fighting through it. You might have to leave earlier or plan for a baby-sitter to take over for the rest of the night.
