Fancy a quintessentially British stay? Then, this is your pick as you get to sleep in a beautiful Georgian townhouse, meters away from the King himself!

Drive to the town along the Thames and enjoy the autumnal colours and the so British houses and other buildings on the way to the hotel.

Once you reach the centre, drive through the high street et voilà! You can’t miss the entrance to the hotel with its 120 luxury bedrooms.

Originally the property of The Caley family, local dressmakers and milliners, it also used to be a jewellers’ shop. So much to love about it…

Our Arrival

Once we drove pass l’hôtel, we turned right and reached the car park within 5 min. Now, you need to book it in advance. But having a butler opening the gate for you and welcoming you to the hotel was certainement something.

As we walked up the stairs and entered the lounge, I immédiatement recognise the place. We actually stayed there 10 years ago as I was pregnant with Stanley! Quelle belle surprise!

L’Atmosphère

With Windsor Castle only on its doorsteps, it was only right to find a welcoming space with une touche of luxury.

From leather armchairs to purple and claret tones décor, the space is comfy and relaxing. It features all the details that you would find in any Macdonald hotel.

It might be a dark palette for some, but it felt quite royal to me. Either way, the arts showcasing Windsor and its history mixed nicely with the more subdued atmosphere. Nothing bling-bling attitude here. It’s a mix of traditional touches with more modern pieces.

Our Family Suite

We were certainement wowed with our family suite. Not only it was a beautiful space, but we also had so much room for the 3 of us.

A sweet teddy was waiting for Stanley on the sofa made up as a bed for the occasion. Such a delight! The room might have featured the same palette of dark ochre and purple, but we got so much light thanks to three windows.

It was pure bliss and I loved having a kind size bed. Now, that’s what I call a rather chambre royale. Or at least, we could pretend we were king and queen, non?

With Macdonald Hotels, it is all about les petites touches: think superior linen, Elemis toiletries, but also a spacious family bathroom. It had all we needed to relax with style.

En plus, there was so much storage with a many built-in wardrobes. It might not matter to some, but I do like getting all my clothing out and make the space mine. What do you think of this family suite? It was pretty grandiose.

Windsor

Stanley might have been happy playing with his military playset (quite fitting for the location). But we wanted to explore the town after the rain.

Windsor in Autumn is so beautiful! The town looks like out of a book with its set of colourful trees and historic buildings.

As we walked around the boutiques and the pubs, we stopped by the castle and took photos like we were tourists. It was beautiful in the late evening light.

But I fell in love when we walked along the Thames. Swans were waiting for us and we stayed a little bit with them before heading to a local pub by the river.

Think an old tavern that’s been serving ales and food for century. Candles on the tables while looking at ducks and swans in the la rivière. That was quite something and we even made a swan friend that we called Freddy. The birds were litéralement following us! They might have thought that I was a leopard…

Dîner at the Caleys Brasserie

It got quickly dark, so we went back to the hotel to have dinner at the Caleys Brasserie. If you have more of a sweet tooth, you can also savour an afternoon tea at the Macdonald Windsor Hotel.

Au menu, British modern cuisine with a selection of fish, pasta but also a good steak if you fancy. I would not expect anything else in the heart of Windsor. The fish of the day was délicieux and he loved his pizza.

We also had breakfast there the day after and I went for a classic British breakfast. It was a must as our break felt ever so quintessentially British. But you can also enjoy fruit, pastries and other continental bits to your taste. Help yourself at the buffet et voilà!

The service was attentive and we had a lovely time overall.

LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort

As the famous LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort is less than 2 miles from town, we drove there early to make the most of the park during its Brick Or Treat event.

Au programme, lots of fun on the rides on a sunny day. But we also made it to the haunted house, the boats and we might have built some new creations while there.

It’s pure heaven for kids and we went home with a few sets to build for the rest of half-term. Book your stay now with the special Black Friday Offer.  You get a 2nd Day in the Theme Park absolutely FREE when you book a 2026 Short Break at LEGOLAND® Windsor.

What a beautiful autumnal break in the heart of Berkshire. I fell in love again with the area. We’ve been there many times, but I forgot how pretty it was. We must come back in the summer and explore it more!

Macdonald Windsor Hotel Review – Le Verdict

The Macdonald Windsor Hotel is one of Windsor’s best hotels, nothing less! We had a lovely stay from start to finish.

The contemporary townhouse certainly stands out on the high street and you can be sure to have a welcoming stay there.

There might not be any gym or spa, but there is so much of English heritage to explore nearby, there is no way you can be bored.

Walk along the river, stop by the indoors market and the local boutiques, say bonjour to the King…

Or have fun in one of the many theme parks nearby… Whatever is your pick, the Macdonald Windsor Hotel makes the perfect base for your family to relax with style.

Admire its rich interiors, enjoy some of the local food preparée just for you or just unwind in your spacious room while dreaming of the life of a queen looking at the window. Personnellement, I just loved lounging in our comfy PJs while watching a cheeky episode of Midsomer Murders.

You can’t make more British than that! I hope my Macdonald Windsor Hotel Review will inspire you to explore this beautiful area. Let me know in the comments if you’ve ever been and what you visited while there. 2015 or 2025, both times, the Macdonald Windsor Hotel met all our expectations.
