Bonjour lecteurs! Do you sometimes think that your home is too small and doesn’t have enough space? Toys, clothes, and other kids’ stuff can quickly take over your living space, making you feel cramped and overwhelmed. I get it! We have a decent sized house and I still sometimes feel that Stanley’s stuff is all over the place! But with some clever organisation and easy tips to put into place, you can save up so much space as a parent. Make your home more functional now with those 8 smart solutions. Follow this guide simple to save space & maximise your home with kids.
1. Declutter Regularly
How often do you declutter? To keep mess free, it’s worth doing it regularly.
Each month, I set aside time to go through toys, clothes, and other items. Do it on your own if you want to be quick or get the children involved so that they can take responsabilité and make some pocket money too!
It will teach them valuable lessons about organisation and sharing. Plus, c’est très simple to sell and make extra-cash with platforms like Depop and Vinted.
2. Use Vertical Space
Using vertical space can save up so much space and actually make your rooms look bigger too! What is there not to like?
Simply get shelves and wall-mounted storage. To save up more space and make it look more organisé, I would instal shelves above furniture or in closets to store books, toys, or decorative items. Also, j’adore floating shelves as they can add up style while freeing up floor space.
Une autre bonne idée? Wall hooks for bags, coats, or hats to keep things off the ground. It looks tidier.
3. Invest in Multi-Functional Furniture
J’adore furniture that serves multiple purposes! C’est très intelligent. Par exemple, ottoman beds with storage inside can hold toys or blankets, while a sofa bed can provide extra sleeping space for guests. Or why not get a dining table with hidden storage so that there’s no clutter.
Look for items that are both functional and stylish to maximise your space effectively.
4. Create a Play Zone
If your home allows it, designate a specific area for play so that all the kids’ items don’t get all over the place. I would go for a space with some easy-to-reach storage solutions so that they can tidy up themselves.
Baskets, boxes or cubbies can make such a différence. Teach kids to put things away after playtime, making it easier to maintain a tidy space. It’s a good routine to establish too.
5. Optimise Closet Space
To make your closet space more efficient, use organisers, boxes and hangers to maximise storage. Consider adding hooks for bags and hats, or use clear containers for easy visibility of smaller items. We try to store toys per categories to make it easier but it’s up to you.
If you have a boiler in a cupboard, use any space on top of it to store seasonal clothes or blankets and extra bedsheets etc.
6. Take Advantage of Under-Bed Storage
The space under the bed is perfect for storing out-of-season clothing, toys, or extra bedding. To save up even more space, I also use some vacuum storage bags, especially in the summer with all our heavy winter coat.
I would also invest in a kids’ bed with extra drawers to put extra clothes and toys. It can significantly reduce clutter in your child’s room or other living spaces and it’s easier to access this way.
7. Seasonal Rotation
To prevent overwhelming your space with toys, consider a toy rotation system. Keep a portion of toys out for play and store the rest in a designated area. Every few weeks, swap out the toys et voilà!
The little ones will ever be more exciting to play with toys they had forgotten about. Less clutter for you and happiness for them! C’est un succés! Twice a year, I also sort out our wardrobe for each season and pack what we don’t need into boxes.
8. Utilise Self Storage
Sometimes, even with the best organisation efforts, you can’t keep it all in your home. Then, it’s worth looking into self storage.
An affordable way to get your items transported into storage is to arrange a collection with a same-day courier service like Drift Couriers and you can have them deliver everything directly to your storage unit.
You can rent it and put whatever you need in it: out-of-season clothes, Xmas decorations, sports gears, baby items you might want to reuse for future siblings… This keeps your home clutter-free and you can access your items whenever you need/ want.
Par exemple, you can find affordable and secure self storage in Reading to store your belongings safely and securely. Plus, they are available anytime you need them!
Fancy a more organised and functional home for your family? Et voilà! Thanks to those 8 simple steps, you can easily save space & maximise your home with kids. Now, to do it myself this weekend with him 🙂
