Try The Freelance Life First

Living the nomad life might sounds idyllic for many. No commute, no rules to follow as you will be your own boss… Or no need to put up with colleagues you don’t like or office politics to put up with.

I can totally see the attraction. Actually, I have been self-employed for over 7 years now and I think I would struggle to get back to an office set up where I have to follow certain guidelines etc. There is nothing better than working around your own schedule and being your own boss.

But it might be a big change for you, so I recommend you start by going freelance first to test the waters. You don’t want to give up on everything you’ve built up so far and being full of regrets.

The nomad life might sound like a dream, but la réalité can be différente. While South Asia is cheaper and you can make a good living without much money, you might want to explore something else. You need to make sure you’ll have a decent living, otherwise it will feel like you are constantly hustling and it will be hell.

The Right Preparation

Ready to kickstart your nomadic journey? Your need to be prepared. Before you live your life for une réelle aventure, you need to rechercher the area(s) you want to visit. Par exemple, check what legal requirement you need to fulfil before you depart.

What documents do you need? For most countries, you will need to apply for a visa. If you are a UK passport holder, ontrailvisa.co.uk can help you with it at competitive prices.

Visit some digital nomad forums to see others experiences and what pitfalls to avoid. You could even plan a itinerary if you want to be organisé, but many take it with the flow.

Tech Up Your Travel

Nowadays, it’s so easy to work from anywhere. But it takes more than a laptop to be a success digital nomad.

As a minimum, I would also invest a project management app, some cloud storage, and a solid VPN to keep your connections secure at all time. You don’t know where you will be and what the WIFI will be like. So it’s une bonne idée to have a back up plan.

There is nothing more stressful than having troubleshoot internet issues on the go. Plus, it would not look pas professionnel if you can’t meet a deadline. You need to stay connected at all times wherever you are.

Work Around Your Strengths

While you had a set schedule before becoming a digital nomad, you will now need to work out when you are the most productive.

You know what we say: ‘work hard, play hard’. You will still need an income so the digital life is not a long-time holiday, spending surfing and enjoying endless cocktails in gorgeous locations around the world…

Are you most productive in the morning, afternoon, evening, late at night? Do what works best for you so that your clients are happy with your work and you also have a good work/ life balance. Personnellement, I am at my top form first thing in the morning. I sometimes have a bit of wobble after lunch and there is no way I am très productive after 7pm!

Your Best Office On The Go

As well as your timetable, you need to set up your best ‘office space’. What does it look like for you?

When I work, I need to be in the zone, so I like listening to some music to keep me going. Or do you prefer a podcast in your ears? Then get a pair of noise-cancelling headphones so that you can be in your little bubble anywhere you go.

You also need a mobile Wi-Fi router to avoid the dreaded ‘No Connection’ icon.

Or are you more productive with other people? Do you want to feel that you have a community around you? Then look for the best internet café or co-working space in the area you currently are in. It can be quite a buzz and you can also bounce ideas with others. There are many hot-spots around the world, so you can work alongside “colleagues” anywhere if you need.

Work / Life Balance

Last but not least… You need to establish a good work / life balance. After all, it’s an amazing experience to travel around the world. What’s the point to do it if you are constantly on your phone or laptop?
