How to have a great bath time with baby – 7 tips to make it happen

I don’t know about you but the prospect to give a bath to Baba was a bit scary at first. I was worried about so many things: not being able to wash him if he was moving too much or simply hurt him by accident. When you come home from the maternity ward with this little baby, this precious bijou that you created, the last thing on earth you want to happen is to break him/ her within a couple of days!

I say that because I am very good at breaking things, especially computers. I either do it on purpose because I am annoyed with the device being too slow. Or sometimes, it’s just my bad luck and it doesn’t work. I am also a famous killer. You didn’t read the post where I described my murder?! Do it now. And you will discover why I avoided being put behind bars.

So giving a bath to Baba was a bit daunting. But we made it and today, Frenchie Mummy is going to tell you how you can achieve this mission. After all, I am not such a bad mother. Ok, I may have bought a pair of handcuffs for Baba to eat peacefully. I may have been in some tricky situations (or silly ones, you will be the judge). I am not the best cook in the world. But when it’s about bath time, I’ m definitely winging it! Here are 7 things to have a happy bath time:

  1. First, don’t be scared to use a support. There are many available on the market and they are truly amazing. I am sure that Baba is safe and I can use my two hands to wash him thoroughly! He can be so fidgety sometimes… It helps Maman becoming confident, So much that I am now at the stage where I take it off half way through the bath. Soon, we will do without it!
  1. An obvious thing to do: the temperature of the water. I check it beforehand. And if Baba shows any resistance or fear, I progressively put him in the bath. First, I sit him on the ledges. While I hold him, then I put some water on his legs. I will play silly a bit, put more water on his chest et voilà! Soon he is in the bath without even realising that Maman tricked him. The grumpy baby that started the experience is now laughing out loud. Luckily, Baba is not scared of the water as we took him to the swimming pool when we went to Norfolk. But he can sometimes have his moment.
  1. To help the baby to further relax, use different strategies (I have the impression that I am on a military mission here ?). Play music in the background if it can help relax le petit (and you as well!). Include some colourful toys in the bath. Baba loves these ones. It’s probably not originally made to be used in the water but it does the trick. And it can also hide his intimate parts when I take a picture for the blog!

    Nobody looks at my willy!
  1. You can also make it a fun time. Baba loves when I make silly noises, especially when I pretend to make un prout on his chest. For further explanation about this bizarre Frenchie word, head over to my Frenchie lesson!
  1. Try to always use the same baby body wash. It will help to implement a routine and  baby to soothe. We are currently using FrezyDerm Baby Bath. It’s very gentle for a sensitive skin and I adore the chamomile that smells délicieuse. Did you know that it provides you with an anti-irritant and anti-inflammatory protection as well? Maintenant, you know!

Le Baba who is checking out the composition. I told you that he was curious.

I am so much in love with this body wash that I am myself using it when I have a bath. Not only it leaves Baba’s skin smooth but everyone is telling me that he smells gorgeous. And Baba loves compliments

  1. Are you done? Wrap the baby up in a nice towel. I will always have the radio on with gentle music while I dry Baba and dress him up. Not to mention that I am covering him in kisses and tickles.
  1. Once the baby is dry, massage him/ her gently with a soft cream. It will for sure create a bond between you over time. Baba is used to it now and is always giggling even before I start as he knows what’s coming up. I’m using Baby Hydra Milk from FrezyDerm as well. I received some samples some time ago and I just fell in love with this brand since then. The tube is nearly finished. I need to get more ASAP! I have never seen Baba with such a soft and smooth skin! I love it! I want to kiss him all the time. Well, I always wanted to kiss him… But even more now!

Other little details about le bain:

  • You don’t need to bathe the baby every day, especially when they are newborn as their skin can be quite fragile. I would clean Baba with a soft washcloth and some warm water when he doesn’t have a bath
  • If your newborn tends to have a dry skin, add a couple of baby oil drops in the water and you will quickly see a difference
  • When you softly dry le bébé, don’t forget the skin folds as he could have a rash. I like to use some baby free-fragrance talc, especially around his neck. He has quite a few layers there and he doesn’t always make it easy for me to reach his neck!

You wanna know more about FrezyDerm and why Frenchie Mummy can’t live without it? C’est simple!

  • Their baby line respects the physiology of infant skin
  • They use wheat proteins, which are known for their softening and moisturising effects
  • They also use Chamomile, which has excellent soothing and anti-irritant properties that reduce inflammations and redness
  • The brand has just been awarded by the Beauty Shortlist Mama & Baby Awards 2016 as the Best Baby Skincare Brand (International).
  • Psst! If you order now, the delivery is free until 22nd August!

Oh I so remember feeling scared about drowning my baby first time around and waited a good few weeks before I attempted it. She loved it though and I had nothing to fear really. Great tips here!

We ran into problems when she got to about a year old as she suddenly developed a fear of the bath (mainly because she suddenly started to hate having her hair washed). It took us a good few weeks if not months trying to make bath time a happy experience again. It involved me getting in (even on my own at first to show how fun it was!), going in together, no washing just play… Eventually she loves it again and we can’t get her out. Of course now she’s found the plug. Seems there are new phases for everything, even the bath!

Hahaha that is so funny but i never thought about the plug! You see that’s weird. When we were off for a week on holiday, there was no bath so I had to wash Baba with a washcloth. Back home and the first time I tried to give him a bath, he started crying. I played around a bit and it was over within 5 minutes. It’s crazy how fast they change their mind. c

I would add one more thing: don’t bathe your baby if you are too tired, grumpy or in a very bad mood. All these things transmit and create a bad athmosphere…

I was terrified the first time I bathed my two! Luckily we had a baby bath with a built in support and I can’t praise it enough. Otherwise you just don’t seem to have enough hands. Lovely advice x

Great post – Emma loves the bath but it took a long time to get her used to it. The first time I bathed her she screamed and clung onto my shirt for dear life! Now she watches the bath running and tries to climb in herself! She loves the bubbles and splashing away makes her laugh very much. But I agree that babies don’t need to bathe every day, which I like when she is feeling under the weather to just have a night or two off. Thanks for linking up to #dreamteam Hope to see you next time xx

Great tips! My mummy hated bath times with me when I was a baby, she would get very nervous and it would kill her back leaning over the side. Nowadays it’s more fun that I’m a toddler, however she’s still cautious around water X #FartGlitter

So cute. And funny how you say the toys are also useful for covering his intimate parts! And baby likes a compliment. Lol. Product sounds lovely thanks for the review.

My husband has to bathe the babies until they are at least a few months old, even 3 kids later it terrifies me. #ABloggingGoodTime

My hubby gave all 3 of our babies their first bath, and after that we shared the bathing. It can be stressful when they are tired and crying, but so beautiful when everyone is relaxed. #mg
